As most of you know, we have witnessed a historic event in American history this week with the election of Barack Obama as The President of the United States of America. I must say that I am proud that our country has risen to a point where we can elect an African American as president just a few decades after the civil rights movement. A time where young people of my generation were witnessing riots about bus seats, water fountains, interacial schools, and the right to vote.
As a white male born in 1961, I remember seeing these events on the news and had no idea what they were about. Never realizing that the fundamentals of freedom, respect, dignity, and social equality was being denied to an entire group of people based solely on skin color. I am proud that we have progressed to the point that as Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of when he said;
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content
of their character.
I admire those who fought against racial injustice, such as Michael Schwerner and James Chaney, the Freedom Summer workers who’s 1964 were murders were depicted in the movie “Mississippi Burning” and the many others who fought against injustice during the movement. Matin Luther King Jr. who was killed when I was 6 years old, tops my list of the most admired person of the twentieth century.
In the 13th Chapter of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans it states that God puts the rulers in place. That can not be argued against. The LORD has placed Barack Obama into position as the leader of our country. We as Christian need to pray for God to grant him wisdom and for the Holy Spirit to guide his decisions.
Yes, I am very proud that America has elected an African American to lead our country through the difficulties ahead.
However, I do hope I’m wrong about some things.
I cast my vote for John McCain in the 2008 elections. I feel the Mr. Obama is too liberal in his social policies, fiscal policies, and foreign policies. I am one of those Christian Right Wing nuts that think that a moral America is a strong America, that the success of our country is bases solely on the blessings of God and not on the efforts of man. As proud as I am of our country, we have elected the wrong man. I am afraid that we have elected our King Saul.
King Saul was granted the throne of Isreal after the people demanded a King against God’s wishes. Saul was unfit for leadership of God’s people. Placing military strategy, pride, and greed above public service and faithfulness to the LORD, Saul ignored his kingly duties of national security, moral leadership, and obedience to God. As a result of many acts of disobedience, the LORD removed Saul from power, and removed his heirs from the throne that should otherwise have been theirs. Basically God said, you want a King, here is your King, knowing that Saul would fail.
Could it be that God is saying, you want a liberal, here is your liberal. I hope not. I hope I am wrong
